Description:
2balls1cup is a game which is especially popular among eCarList employees, but can be enjoyed by any group looking for anything from a good laugh to a world series level of competition . It is generally played one on one (mono e mono), with each person standing at opposing ends of a table, rectangular surface. One cup is placed in the center of the table atop a stack of 5 magazines to increase difficulty. The players attempt to bounce 2 completely different style balls into an empty cup. When a player makes a bounce into the cup, a player is awarded with points depending on which ball was used. The ping pong ball is worth 5 point(s) and the orange ball worth 1 point(s). The game continues in this way, with one player taking a shot with both balls simultaneously, followed by the other player taking their shots. The first player to reach a score value of 20+ points is the winner. To begin, the players takes a shot simultaneously. This is repeated until one player makes, and one player misses. This decides who gets the first possession. After the first game, the winning player gets the first shot. The elbow rule is also applied for EVERY shot. A players elbow may not cross the plane of the playing table or it does not count.
Scoring:
If a player successfully makes a bounced shot, they are awarded the points for the type of ball used. As we already know, the ping-pong ball is worth 5 point(s) and the orange ball is worth 1 point(s). If a player successfully makes both shots he/she will be awarded the Make-It-Take-It Rule and the get the balls back for two more shots skipping the other players turn. For more information on the Make-It-Take-It Rule please see the Rebuttal section of the rules.
Rebuttal:
The rebuttal rule only applies at the end of the game. When one player has reached 20+ points, the other player has not lost yet. The player with less than 20 points gets a chance to make both balls into the cup in order to force an overtime. If the player with less than 20 points makes both balls into the cup they then have a chance to re-shoot (Make-It-Take It Rule which will be discussed further) to take the lead . There is an exception to the rebuttal rule: when it comes into conflict with the Make It-Take it rule, Make It-Take it is observed. This occurs when, for example, both players have a total of 20+ points and one player has just made both balls into the cup. Under usual circumstances, they would get the balls back and shoot again, which in this case gives them the victory because it’s their turn eliminating the other player. Rebuttal doesn’t take place when the player earns Make it-Take it after they have reached 20+ points. The game just ends. This isn’t just an arbitrary choice of one rule over another; there is some logic behind it. Rebuttal is simply the last turn for the losing player. Make it-Take it means you lose your turn when the other player makes both balls on the same turn…so if you think about it, you’re losing your turn if this happens to you; it just happens to be your last turn. In short: Make it-Take it is observed before rebuttal when they come into conflict.

Deflections:
Once a shot is taken, it is considered a live ball. The defending player can’t interfere with a bounced shot.

Overtime:
If, on rebuttal, a player is able to eliminate the other by scoring 20+ points, regulation ends in a tie. But there won’t be any ties in 2balls1cup. Each player then resumes play under the same rules. If, by some improbable twist of fate, overtime ends in a tie, continue playing overtimes until a winner is decided.

To determine the rules before game time, decide any point of disagreement by asking the host of your game, or, if this person is for some reason incapacitated, ask someone else that knows the rules. It’s just a game at work, so relax and have fun.
